The Delhi government has given time till November end for ecommerce companies to start filing mandatory quarterly returns, provid ing specific information on sellers from the national capital on their platform.“Attention! All ecommerce web por tals,“ a half-page ad issued by Delhi government's department of trade and taxes on Monday said. “It is compulsory to enrol with the department by filing form EC-1 online.“ In a bid to check tax evasion by Delhi-based sellers on online platforms, the department had in September made it mandatory for ecommerce companies to file quarterly transactional informa tion on online sellers from the state.
Tax officials said the move will plug a loophole in the system whereby a host of online sellers based out of the national capital do not pay taxes that are due to the government.
Karnataka had taken the lead to tax on ecommerce transactions last year.The state had questioned Amazon's fulfilment centre model and sought to impose value-added tax on goods sold through the site, treating it as a commercial agent, a characterisation that the company has rejected.
Taking a cue from this, states such as Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Delhi have sought to increase scrutiny on marketplace ecommerce platforms and made disclosure of monthly sales data mandatory for vendors registered with them.
